A Perkins engine major overhaul is a process that involves disassembly, cleaning, inspection, repair as necessary, assembly followed by testing afterwards using Perkins factory service manual approved methods and procedures. The process generally involves honing, fitting new piston rings, new bearings, gaskets and oil seals. Perkins engines may be overhauled to different standards typically 'new limits' or 'service limits', or a combination of the two using some used parts and some new original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts. For example new-limit Perkins parts may deteriorate to these tolerances over time but still be a usable component. This may also be accomplished using "standard" and approved "undersized" and "oversized" tolerances.
